Production of Four Different Crop Types in the UK

d) Harvesting and Storage

Carrots are ready for harvesting approximately 12–16 weeks after sowing. Harvest gently by hand or using a fork. For storage, carrots can be placed in boxes layered with slightly moist sand in a cool, frost-free shed, allowing for preservation through winter (RHS, 2023).

e) Under Cover Cultivation

Growing carrots under cloches or tunnels early in the season extends cropping into late autumn and winter, providing protection from frost and pests (Garden Organic, 2021).

2. Leafy Vegetable: Lettuce (Lactuca sativa)

a) Suitable Site and Soil

Lettuce prefers nutrient-rich, moisture-retentive soil in full sun to partial shade. A slightly alkaline soil (pH 6.5–7.5) is ideal, enriched with organic compost (Soil Association, 2022).

d) Harvesting and Storage

e) Under Cover Cultivation

Lettuce grows exceptionally well under cover, extending the cropping period through autumn and winter. Greenhouses or polytunnels protect from adverse weather, allowing year-round production (Soil Association, 2022).

3. Top Fruit: Apple (Malus domestica)

a) Suitable Site and Soil

Apples require well-drained, fertile loamy soils with good organic content and a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). Sheltered, sunny sites with protection from frost pockets maximise cropping success (National Fruit Collection, 2022).

b) Successful Cultivation

Plant apples between November and March. Staking and annual pruning ensure structural integrity and productivity. Fruit thinning in early summer prevents over-cropping and improves fruit size and quality. Espaliers or cordons are ideal for smaller spaces (Garden Organic, 2022).

c) Pests, Diseases, and Control

Common pests include codling moth larvae, managed through pheromone traps and nematodes. Apple scab (Venturia inaequalis) is a significant disease, managed with resistant varieties like 'Discovery' and by meticulous pruning practices to ensure airflow (HDRA, 2020). Woolly aphids are managed with natural predators such as ladybirds.

d) Harvesting and Storage
